Cunha Pledges Future to Wolves with New Long-Term Deal

Matheus Cunha’s future at Wolverhampton Wanderers was in doubt just days ago, with speculation mounting about a potential departure before the January transfer window closed. However, after scoring in a 2-0 West Midlands derby win over Aston Villa, the Brazil forward’s goal celebration raised questions about his intentions.

In front of the Molineux crowd, Cunha pointed to the Wolves crest on his shirt, blew kisses to the fans, and mimicked signing a contract, hinting at his decision to stay.

A few hours later, Wolves confirmed Cunha’s commitment to the club, announcing that the 25-year-old forward had signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract. Cunha, who joined Wolves on loan from Atletico Madrid in December 2022 with a potential £35m deal, has been in strong form this season, scoring 11 goals in 23 Premier League appearances.

Wolves head coach Vitor Pereira expressed his satisfaction with Cunha’s decision, emphasizing the player’s commitment to ensuring Wolves maintain their Premier League status. “He knows in the future he can play for the best teams in England, but he’s committed with us,” Pereira said.

Cunha’s decision to stay at Wolves comes at an important moment for the club, who had been fighting to escape the relegation zone. The 2-0 victory over Villa, combined with Cunha’s goal and leadership, lifted the Wolves out of the bottom three, giving the club a much-needed boost in their quest to stay in the top flight.
