Southampton coach Ivan Juric has praised Nigerian players Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu after their goals helped the team secure a 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday.
This win was a huge boost for Southampton, who had only won once in their previous 23 matches and were sitting at the bottom of the Premier League.
Aribo scored the opening goal, giving Southampton an early lead while Onuachu scored the winning goal late in the match, securing the first victory for Juric since he became Southampton’s coach.
Juric praised the duo and noted that they worked hard and deserved the goals, and he believed the strikers could score even more goals moving forward.
“It’s a great feeling. I think we did some even better games than this game, like Manchester United, and didn’t take points. We suffered in a few moments, but the guys were great and we deserved it,”
“We have quality, and the second goal is the quality of Deeno (Kamaldeen) and the quality of Paul [Onuachu].
“Joe [Aribo], for me, is a great guy; everything for the team. He doesn’t care if he is a forward, at the back, or in the middle. Today, he played left centre-back, and I think he did a great second half. We worked hard, really well, and Joe today was great,” he said.
Even with the win, Southampton is still sitting in 20th place with just 9 points from 24 games. The team is at risk of being relegated to the EFL Championship.
