US President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, raising tensions with America’s top trading partners. Trump said the tariffs, beginning from Tuesday, will be 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico and 10% on imports from China, targeting a range of industries, including energy and consumer goods.
Trump’s decision follows his long-standing concerns over drug trafficking and illegal immigration, with the White House stating that the tariffs are a necessary response to address the flow of dangerous substances like fentanyl into the US.
In response to the tariffs, both Canada and Mexico have vowed to retaliate. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the accusations of collaboration with criminal organizations, stressing the need for diplomatic solutions over measures. Mexico is preparing to impose 25% tariffs on US goods, including agricultural and manufactured products.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin said, “We don’t want to be here, we didn’t ask for this. But we will not back down in standing up for Canadians”, he said in a news conference on Saturday.
The move has put a strain on relations between the US and its neighbours, who share deeply integrated economies. Experts warn that the tariffs could drive up costs for consumers, affecting everyday products like food, vehicles, and household goods. The US retail sector is already voicing concerns over the potential negative impact on prices.
Economists predict the new tariffs could lead to higher inflation and slower economic growth across the region. While Trump’s administration argues that the tariffs are necessary to protect American jobs and secure borders, many industry groups, including homebuilders and farmers, fear the added costs could harm their businesses.
