FCT Enrols Kuje Inmates in Health Scheme

The Federal Capital Territory Administration on Tuesday launched free health insurance enrolment and medical outreach for inmates at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja to improve healthcare access for over 1,500 inmates across correctional facilities in the FCT.

The programme, introduced under the FCT Health Insurance Scheme and Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, began in Kuje and will later extend to facilities in Gwagwalada and Suleja.

Officials said the initiative was approved by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as part of efforts to expand healthcare coverage.

Speaking during the launch, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe said inmates enrolled in the scheme would receive free medical consultations, laboratory tests, surgeries, emergency care and essential drugs.

She said the programme aligns with the goal of achieving universal healthcare coverage for all residents, including inmates.

During the outreach, inmates received malaria tests, blood pressure checks, eye examinations and medications, while some were also enrolled for National Identification Numbers.

The FCTA also donated medical supplies and supported vocational training activities within the facility.

Officials said more than 550 inmates were screened for health conditions, while over 130 received corrective eyeglasses during the exercise.
