FRSC Targets Fake Diplomatic Plates

The Federal Road Safety Corps on Monday launched “Operation Guduma” in Awka to arrest motorists using fake diplomatic number plates and curb overloading on Nigerian roads amid growing security concerns.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, represented by Oko Etuali, said the operation followed reports that many individuals were illegally using ambassadorial and diplomatic number plates.

He said the development had become a major concern because of the country’s security challenges.

“We discovered that most people are faking ambassadorial or diplomatic number plates and using them to ply the roads,” he said.

Mohammed explained that the FRSC designs and produces number plates, while state governments issue them to public officials.

According to him, many former government officials fail to return official number plates after leaving office.

He added that the operation had already started in some states and would run in Anambra and Enugu from May 18 to May 22.

On overloading, the FRSC said it had begun sensitisation campaigns at motor parks to educate drivers on the dangers of carrying excess passengers and goods.

The corps warned that enforcement would begin after the awareness campaign, adding that offenders would be sanctioned.
