Lassa Fever Kills 191, Infects 776 in 23 States

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday said 776 people contracted Lassa fever and 191 died from the disease across 23 states in 2026, as health authorities intensified efforts to contain the outbreak in affected communities.

In its Week 18 situation report, the agency said the fatality rate rose to 24.6 per cent, compared to 19.2 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.

The NCDC confirmed 22 new cases between April 27 and May 3 in Ondo, Edo and Plateau states, bringing the total suspected cases this year to 4,861.

According to the agency, Bauchi and Ondo states recorded the highest number of infections, accounting for 26 per cent each of confirmed cases, followed by Taraba, Edo and Benue.

The agency also disclosed that one healthcare worker was infected during the latest reporting week.

The NCDC said response measures include contact tracing, community sensitisation, infection prevention training for health workers and deployment of rapid response teams to high-burden states.

It urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with rodents and report symptoms early to health facilities.
