The World Health Organization on Tuesday warned in Madrid, Spain, that more hantavirus cases could emerge in the coming weeks after passengers were evacuated from the outbreak-hit cruise ship, MV Hondius, as health authorities continue monitoring exposed travellers across several countries following the virus outbreak that has killed three people.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 11 hantavirus-related cases have been recorded so far, including three deaths, while nine of the infections were confirmed as Andes virus cases.
Despite the outbreak, Tedros said the global public health risk remains low and there is currently no sign of wider transmission.
He explained that all evacuated passengers are expected to undergo health monitoring for 42 days from their last exposure date, with anyone showing symptoms to be isolated and treated immediately.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the evacuation process as successful, noting that Spain coordinated special flights to evacuate more than 120 passengers and crew members from the vessel under strict health and safety measures.
The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius later departed Tenerife for Rotterdam with a reduced crew onboard after the evacuation operation was completed.
