The Academy of Medical Sciences, Nigeria on Monday urged the Federal Government, health agencies and border authorities to intensify surveillance and preparedness after Ebola outbreaks were confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, warning of possible cross-border transmission into Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Prof. Obinna Onwujekwe and Emeritus Prof. Osato Giwa-Osagie, the Academy called on the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Port Health Services to strengthen screening at airports, seaports and land borders.
It said the outbreaks, as of May 16, 2026, recorded confirmed and suspected cases as well as deaths in both countries.
The Academy described Ebola as a severe viral haemorrhagic disease spread through contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated items and unsafe burial practices.
It warned that African countries remain vulnerable to cross-border infectious diseases and stressed the need for early detection and rapid response systems.
The group recommended enhanced traveller screening, activation of emergency response teams, improved diagnostic capacity and adequate stockpiling of protective equipment.
It also urged hospitals to enforce strict infection prevention and control measures, including rapid isolation of suspected cases.
The Academy advised Nigerians to remain vigilant, maintain hygiene, avoid contact with bodily fluids and promptly report symptoms to health authorities.
It added that Nigeria’s successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak demonstrated the importance of coordinated public health action.
