Oluremi Tinubu: Agriculture Holds the Key to Nigeria’s Progress

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the central role of agriculture in the country’s development, highlighting its potential to ensure food security, create jobs, and boost the economy.

The First Lady made this known on Wednesday during the distribution of farm inputs and financial grants to 400 farmers in Asaba, Delta State, under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Agricultural Support Programme. The programme was organised in partnership with the You Matter Charity Foundation.

Represented by the wife of the Delta State Governor, Tobore Oborevwori, Mrs. Tinubu expressed joy at the growing interest in farming, particularly among women, youths, students in secondary schools, and cooperative groups. The essence of this initiative is to bring us back on track and increase food production across the nation,” she said. “

This is about feeding your family and sharing with your neighbours.”She disclosed that the programme focused on four main beneficiary groups: women, youths, students, and farming cooperatives—each receiving essential farm tools and seedlings to support agricultural activities. The First Lady encouraged recipients to stay committed to farming, revealing that she personally maintains a garden at home where she grows corn and vegetables. For those who haven’t started, please give it a thought,” she urged. “Let’s join hands to grow more food and move from scarcity to abundance.”

She emphasized that supporting them is essential for the nation’s progress.Empowering farmers is not merely an intervention—it is a necessity,” she added. “It restores hope, promotes food security, and boosts household income.”

She also commended Senator Tinubu for her leadership, describing the support as a stepping stone toward improved food productivity, job creation, and long-term prosperity for both Delta State and Nigeria at large. To all stakeholders here today, let us continue to build a Delta State and a Nigeria where agriculture thrives, women are empowered, and prosperity is attainable for all,” she concluded.

Also present at the event, the Delta State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Val Arenyeka, emphasized the indispensable role of farmers in achieving food sufficiency.Without farmers, there would be no food,” he said, urging more citizens to embrace agriculture. In a similar vein, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Harry Triakriowei, lauded the inclusion of young people in the Renewed Hope Initiative, describing it as a timely intervention to enhance youth participation in agriculture and secure the country’s food future.
