UnitedHealthcare has named Tim Noel as its new CEO, almost two months after the company’s previous leader, Brian Thompson, was shot and killed in New York City. Thompson was shot on December 4, 2024, just before he was set to attend the company’s annual investors’ meeting. His death shocked many and sparked conversations about the high costs and fairness of the U.S. healthcare system.
Noel, who has worked at the company for many years, would now lead the nation’s largest health insurer, which covers over 50 million people. UnitedHealth Group, the parent company, said they are confident in Noel’s ability to improve healthcare for consumers, doctors, businesses, and government partners.
The search for Thompson’s killer ended five days later when 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania. Mangione is charged with murder, terrorism, and other serious offenses, and he has pleaded not guilty.
Thompson’s death has brought more attention to the frustrations many Americans felt about the U.S. healthcare system. Many people believe healthcare costs are too high and that insurance companies treat their customers unfairly. Thompson’s murder has made these concerns more urgent and brought more attention to how big insurance companies operate.
Mangione’s arrest has raised questions about why he killed Thompson, but the police have not shared many details about his background or any connection to Thompson.
