Kogi State has successfully immunised no fewer than 77,495 children against polio in a recent vaccination campaign, restating its 10-year polio-free status. The effort targeted remote communities across seven local government areas (LGAs) in the state, helping to ensure that children who were previously missed or inadequately covered are now vaccinated.
The state’s Immunisation Officer, Grace Ojofedo, disclosed that the campaign called the “Big Catch-Up,” was completed between January 6 and 13, 2025. In total, 80,608 vaccines were administered, achieving an impressive 99% coverage rate. However, a 5% wastage rate was noted during the programme.
Ojofedo noted that this initiative was built on the success of Kogi’s previous polio immunisation efforts, extending coverage to the most isolated areas, which were crucial to the completion of the state’s comprehensive vaccination drive.
She praised UNICEF for its support, which has been instrumental in the success of the exercise. She stressed that the contributions of the global health agency have been significant in helping Kogi sustain its polio-free status, offering both technical and logistical support.
