Kogi Moves to Attract Climate Funding as Ododo Reaffirms Environmental Commitment

The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, with plans to strengthen the state’s capacity to attract local and international climate finance.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo stated this on Wednesday during the opening of the Climate Finance Readiness Assessment (CFRA) Technical Assistance Programme at the Government House in Lokoja.

Represented by his deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, the governor said climate change poses significant challenges to agriculture, water resources, the environment and livelihoods, stressing the need for coordinated and practical responses.

He noted that the establishment of the Kogi State Climate Change Agency provides an institutional framework for coordinating climate policies and programmes across the state.

Ododo also highlighted ongoing efforts to develop a state-specific climate change policy and strengthen partnerships with national and international organisations to promote environmental sustainability and attract investment.

According to him, the assessment will identify institutional and technical gaps, strengthen capacity and support the development of credible projects capable of attracting climate funding.

The governor commended the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) for providing the technical assistance at no cost to the state, describing the initiative as an important step towards addressing climate-related challenges.

He assured that his administration would continue to support policies and programmes aimed at protecting the environment, promoting sustainable development and improving residents’ quality of life.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Kogi State Climate Change Agency, Hon. Ajibade Onimisi, said the assessment would help identify existing gaps and improve the state’s readiness to access climate finance.

Onimisi commended the governor for supporting climate action and environmental sustainability, while appreciating PACE for its partnership.

He urged ministries, departments, agencies and other stakeholders to actively participate in the exercise and ensure its recommendations translate into tangible benefits for the people.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Stephen, praised the governor’s commitment to environmental protection and climate action.

He said the state was strengthening climate governance through the establishment of the Climate Change Agency, the development of climate policies and improved collaboration among government ministries and agencies.

Stephen added that the assessment would help the state address existing gaps, improve access to climate finance and attract investments for climate-related projects.
