Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has urged Christian leaders to promote unity and peaceful coexistence ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against the use of the pulpit to fuel ethnic, political and religious divisions.
Ododo gave the warning on Saturday during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kogi State Branch, held under the theme, “The Glory of Worshipping Together in Faith.”
The governor called on religious leaders to pray for Nigeria and Kogi State, while encouraging responsible political participation and issue-based engagement ahead of the elections.
He said political differences should not undermine the unity of the state, stressing that the Church must remain a platform for reconciliation, moral instruction and peaceful coexistence.
Ododo also expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, urging Nigerians to remain committed to the country’s pursuit of economic recovery and prosperity.
He acknowledged the contributions of religious institutions to education, healthcare, humanitarian services and peacebuilding, assuring CAN of his administration’s continued support for partnerships that promote development.
Earlier, CAN Kogi State Chairman, Special Apostle Pastor Dr Adebayo Emmanuel Olaniyan, announced the ongoing construction of the Kogi State CAN Ecumenical Centre in Lokoja.
The facility is expected to accommodate a nursery and primary school, a secondary school, the state CAN secretariat and two multipurpose halls.
Olaniyan appealed to the state government, corporate organisations and well-meaning Christians to support the completion of the project.
He also commended former CAN leaders for their contributions to the association and thanked the Ododo administration for its support, while disclosing that discussions were ongoing with the government over outstanding commitments relating to the association’s former secretariat site.
The golden jubilee featured thanksgiving, a concert and an award presentation recognising individuals for their contributions to the Church and society.
