The deteriorating condition of major roads across Kogi State, particularly the Kabba-Mopa-Isanlu, Kabba-Omuo, and Abuja-Lokoja corridors, has become unacceptable and requires urgent federal intervention.
These roads are critical economic lifelines for our people, and many other Nigerians. Their continued deterioration is causing enormous hardship, damaging vehicles, increasing travel time and costs, and putting the lives of motorists and commuters at risk.
I therefore call on the Federal Government to urgently rehabilitate these roads and put in place a sustainable maintenance programme to prevent further deterioration.
Going forward, given the economic challenges of road maintenance, it has become necessary for government to also look beyond public funding.
Indeed, the heavy movement of cement trucks operated by Dangote Cement and Mangal Cement has placed significant additional pressure on several of these already vulnerable roads. These companies depend heavily on our road infrastructure for their commercial operations and make substantial profits from activities that rely on these routes.
They must therefore accept their fair share of responsibility.
Also, I call on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to undertake an objective assessment of the impact of heavy haulage on these roads and engage the affected companies on a concrete programme of road rehabilitation and maintenance.
Dangote and Mangal cannot continue to use these roads extensively for commercial purposes while leaving government and taxpayers to bear the entire cost of repairing the damage associated with heavy haulage.
This is not an attack on business or investment. Yes, we welcome investment, but investment must come with RESPONSIBILITY!
The message is simple:
The Federal Government must do its job.
The companies must do their part.
And our people must no longer be left to bear the cost.
The people of Kogi State, particularly Kogi West Senatorial District deserve safe, durable and motorable roads.
Our roads are economic lifelines, not disposable infrastructure.
The time for urgent action is NOW!
