The National Association of Resident Doctors has suspended its planned strike and directed members to resume duties nationwide by 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday following fresh assurances from the Federal Government.
The decision was reached after an emergency meeting of the association’s National Executive Council, where progress in negotiations on key welfare issues was reviewed.
NARD said the suspension was based on commitments by the government to address outstanding salary arrears, hazard allowances, and concerns surrounding the Medical Residency Training Fund.
The association noted that while the dispute has not been fully resolved, there was a renewed willingness by authorities to engage and meet its demands.
Confirming the development, Dr Uthman Adedeji said the directive aligns with the resolution of the national body.
The dispute is linked to the implementation of a revised professional allowance structure agreed upon after a 2025 strike, which includes improved payments for call duty, shifts, and rural postings.
However, delays and concerns over a possible discontinuation of the allowance framework had triggered fresh tensions between doctors and the government.
The recurring disagreements over welfare and working conditions have continued to strain Nigeria’s health sector, contributing to the migration of medical professionals abroad.
