Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has pledged to restore Nigeria’s National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, alongside other national sports facilities across Nigeria, through public-private partnerships.
During a recent visit to the stadium, Dikko expressed disappointment over its deteriorated condition, which he attributed to years of neglect despite its significant potential for economic and sporting growth.
Dikko disclosed that his visit was part of efforts to finalize plans for the stadium’s concessioning to the private sector, which aims to revamp the facility and transform it into a multi-functional hub. He emphasized the importance of revitalizing the National Stadium, pointing out its rich history and potential to become a major center for sports, entertainment, and commercial activities, in line with global standards.
The NSC chairman also acknowledged the contribution of philanthropist Chief Kessington Adebutu, who assisted in reviving parts of the stadium, such as the pitch and scoreboard, under the “adopt a facility” initiative led by former Sports Minister, Sunday Dare.
In addition to the National Stadium, Dikko outlined plans for the rehabilitation of other key sports facilities across Nigeria. These stadiums include the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi, Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, and Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. Dikko also highlighted plans to construct 100 mini-stadiums nationwide as part of the broader vision to stimulate grassroots development.
