The Nigeria Customs Service on Thursday said it sealed MT NY Maria at Tincan Island Port, Lagos, after the vessel allegedly began discharging premium motor spirit without the required Customs clearance.
In a statement by the Tincan Island Command spokesperson, Oscar Ivara, the NCS said the vessel arrived from the Dangote refinery but lacked complete documentation, including the mandatory last port clearance.
Customs said officers sealed the vessel and gave its agent two days to provide the missing documents before discovering that discharge operations had started without approval.
The agency added that officers later resealed the vessel and invited the ship master for questioning as part of ongoing investigations.
According to the NCS, the enforcement action was backed by the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, which empowers officers to inspect, detain and regulate cargo operations within customs-controlled areas.
The service warned terminal operators and shipping firms to comply with all clearance and documentation requirements before handling cargo at Nigerian ports.
