The Centre for Public Accountability on Thursday said the Tertiary Education Trust Fund remains critical to sustaining Nigeria’s higher education sector, warning that many public institutions would have suffered worse infrastructural decay without the agency’s interventions. The group made this known during a virtual press conference while presenting findings from its nationwide assessment of TETFund projects and programmes.
The CPA Executive Director, Olufemi Lawson, said the assessment showed that TETFund has continued to improve infrastructure, research funding and academic development in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
According to the organisation, TETFund disbursed over ₦1.8tn to public tertiary institutions between 2011 and 2024, supporting the execution of more than 152,000 projects nationwide.
Lawson also commended the management of TETFund under Executive Secretary Sonny Echono for sustaining intervention programmes despite economic challenges and rising project costs.
The group, however, urged beneficiary institutions to ensure transparency, proper utilisation of funds and timely completion of projects to improve learning conditions in the education sector.
