The United States has disbursed $187.3 million in foreign assistance to Nigeria in 2026, according to data released on May 20 by the US Department of State, as American lawmakers consider stricter conditions for future aid to the country.
The report showed that Nigeria became the second-largest recipient of US aid in sub-Saharan Africa after Ethiopia.
Most of the funding, about $186.7 million, was disbursed through the United States Agency for International Development, while other US agencies contributed smaller amounts.
The development comes as US lawmakers push for tighter monitoring of assistance to Nigeria over insecurity, human rights and humanitarian concerns.
Under a proposed US bill, up to 50 per cent of future aid to Nigeria could be withheld unless the Federal Government shows progress in tackling violence and protecting vulnerable communities.
The Nigerian government has denied allegations of religious persecution, insisting that insecurity affects people of all faiths.
