United States Congressman Riley Moore on Sunday warned terrorists in Nigeria not to test President Donald Trump’s resolve after Nigerian and US forces killed ISIS commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki in a joint air strike in the Lake Chad Basin aimed at tackling terrorism and attacks on Christians.
Moore, a Republican member of the House Appropriations Committee, made the statement during an interview on NewsNation while discussing insecurity and alleged persecution of Christians in north-eastern Nigeria.
“The strike on Abu-Bilal al-Minuki sends a clear message that those who target innocent Christians will be hunted down and brought to justice,” Moore said.
He added that Trump personally directed him to investigate reports of attacks on Christians in Nigeria and submit recommendations to the White House.
“President Trump tasked me personally to investigate the issue of Christian persecution in Nigeria,” he said.
Moore stated that the US had remained involved in counterterrorism efforts in Nigeria since the rise of Boko Haram.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that al-Minuki was killed during a coordinated precision strike in the Lake Chad Basin.
Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, described the slain terrorist as one of ISIS’ top global commanders involved in weapons production, drone development and international operations.
According to the military, intelligence reports suggested al-Minuki recently rose to become the second most senior ISIS leader globally.
Before joining ISIS in 2015, al-Minuki was a senior Boko Haram commander linked to the 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls’ abduction.
