Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi met UK business and political stakeholders, including Lord Jonathan Marland, in London on Tuesday to discuss trade opportunities, MSME development, and economic growth in Nigeria.
Obi said in a statement that the discussions focused on strengthening Nigeria’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to drive job creation and improve productivity in key sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing.
He noted that his engagement with Marland, who chairs the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, centred on strategies to expand access to support for small businesses and attract investment into Nigeria’s economy.
Obi said countries like China, Indonesia and Vietnam achieved rapid growth by prioritising small businesses and industrial development.
He reiterated that MSMEs remain the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and must receive stronger institutional backing to boost employment and reduce poverty.
“As I have consistently said, MSMEs are the driving force of economic growth and must be supported to expand opportunities and create jobs,” he said.
