South Korea to Give Cash Support to 36 Million People Over Rising Fuel Prices

South Korea will provide cash assistance to about 36 million people to ease the impact of rising fuel prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

The National Assembly approved a 26.2 trillion-won supplementary budget to support low and middle-income earners facing economic pressure.

Under the new programme, eligible residents in the Seoul area will receive 100,000 won, while people living in areas with declining populations may get up to 250,000 won.

The South Korean government said the second round of applications for the cash support programme will begin next Monday.

Officials explained that eligibility will depend on national health insurance payments and household income levels.

However, households with assets above 1.2 billion won or high financial income will not qualify for the assistance.

Recipients can access the funds through debit cards, credit cards, prepaid cards or local currency vouchers.

The support funds will expire on August 31 and can only be used at small local businesses.

Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung said the programme is expected to reduce the burden caused by high oil prices and boost local consumption.
