Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has announced the renaming of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja as Ibrahim Idris Specialist Hospital in honour of the late former governor and in recognition of his contributions to the development of the state.
Ododo made the announcement on Wednesday during the 40th day prayer held in honour of the late Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as Baba Ibro.
The governor described the deceased as a detribalised leader, astute businessman, committed humanitarian and one of the most consequential figures in Kogi State’s political history.
He said Idris’ contributions to the state, particularly during his tenure as governor, would remain part of its collective history, noting that his leadership was defined by the institutions he established, those he strengthened and the opportunities he created for the people.
According to Ododo, the late former governor understood that leadership was measured by the lives touched and the opportunities created for others.
He also noted that the gathering of political leaders and other prominent personalities from different ethnic, religious and political backgrounds at the prayer demonstrated the deceased’s ability to build bridges across divisions and unite people around common interests.
The governor urged Kogites to draw lessons from Idris’ life by prioritising unity, peaceful coexistence and the collective development of the state.
He expressed condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Omala Local Government Area, the Igala Kingdom and residents of Kogi State, praying that Almighty Allah would grant them the strength to bear the loss.
Ododo further charged the family to preserve the late patriarch’s legacy, stressing that sustaining the name and reputation he built would require commitment, sacrifice and unity.
The governor also emphasised the responsibility of the state government to preserve the contributions of past leaders, saying their achievements should remain visible in public institutions and serve as inspiration to future generations.
He described the renaming of the specialist hospital as part of efforts to ensure that Idris’ name remained associated with public service, development and the wellbeing of the people.
Ododo prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive the deceased’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
He also called on the people of Kogi State to uphold the values of unity and service exemplified by the late former governor, declaring that although Baba Ibro was gone, his legacy must continue to live on.
