Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has unveiled project inspection kits produced by the State Ministry of Works, urging engineers, supervisors and other technical personnel to uphold professionalism, accountability, teamwork and safety in the execution and monitoring of public infrastructure projects.
The governor made this known on Tuesday at the Government House in Lokoja, describing the Ministry of Works as a key institution responsible for translating government policies and development plans into tangible projects that improve the lives of residents.
Ododo stressed that the success of any administration depended partly on the performance of its infrastructure sector, noting that engineers and other civil servants had important roles to play in ensuring that public investments delivered the intended benefits.
He commended engineers, accountants, technicians, supervisors and other civil servants for their contributions to the state’s development, expressing confidence in their ability to address its infrastructure challenges when provided with the necessary support and working environment.
“When you work for the people, you are indirectly working for yourself. When you project your commitment, you are also projecting yourself,” the governor said, urging public officers to remain committed to their responsibilities.
He called for stronger collaboration between political officeholders and professional civil servants, encouraging engineers to provide technical advice and recommend better approaches whenever necessary.
The governor emphasised that constructive engagement, mutual respect and adherence to due process were essential to preventing avoidable errors and ensuring the quality, durability and value of public infrastructure.
As part of the initiative, Ododo formally unveiled reflective jackets for engineers and other government personnel who regularly visit construction sites, highlighting the importance of their safety during project inspections.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Barr. Salami Momodu Ozigi Deedat, described the ministry as central to the state’s infrastructure development, particularly in the delivery of roads and other public works.
He said the ministry was working to complete inherited projects alongside ongoing infrastructure interventions aimed at improving road networks, connectivity and public services across the state.
The commissioner explained that the inspection kits were introduced to establish a distinct professional identity for government engineers and inspection teams during site visits.
According to him, government personnel had sometimes relied on arrangements provided by contractors during project monitoring. The new kits would help distinguish officials responsible for inspection from contractors and make their roles more recognisable at construction sites.
Ozigi Deedat urged engineers and other relevant personnel to use the kits appropriately and maintain regular communication with the ministry’s leadership to strengthen project monitoring and supervision.
He also acknowledged Governor Ododo’s continued interest in the ministry’s activities, noting that the attention given to project implementation placed greater responsibility on officials to remain committed to their duties and uphold professional standards.
