The Central Bank of Nigeria has alerted the public to a surge in fraudulent emails and online scams falsely linked to the apex bank, urging Nigerians to exercise caution in digital communications.
In a statement issued by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, the bank said it had observed an increase in misleading messages designed to deceive users into disclosing sensitive information.
The CBN noted that the fraudulent communications often prompt recipients to click malicious links or spread false claims about the bank’s leadership and policies in a bid to compromise personal accounts.
It warned that cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, with perpetrators exploiting digital platforms to access financial data and perpetrate fraud.
The bank advised Nigerians to rely only on its official website and verified channels for information, while avoiding suspicious links and unsolicited requests for personal or financial details.
It also urged the public to report suspected fraud to law enforcement agencies, stressing the need for collective vigilance.
The apex bank reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cybersecurity measures in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect the financial system and consumers.
