The Nigerian government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former German President Horst Köhler, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 81 following a brief illness.
In a statement released by the acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria conveyed its condolences to the government and people of Germany.
Köhler, who served as Germany’s President from 2004 to 2010, was a key figure in international diplomacy, having also led the International Monetary Fund as its Managing Director before assuming the presidency.
His efforts to strengthen ties between Germany and African nations, including Nigeria, were highlighted by the Nigerian government. Köhler’s tenure as president was marked by his dedication to advancing multilateralism and sustainable development.
In its tribute, the Nigerian government emphasized that Köhler’s passing represents a loss not only for Germany but also for the global community.
“The demise of Horst Köhler is a great loss not only to Germany but to the global community, which benefited immensely from his leadership, vision, and dedication to international cooperation and development.
“In this moment of grief, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Germany and honours the memory of a distinguished statesman whose life was devoted to the pursuit of a better world,” the statement read.
