The Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the terrorist attack on Iluke Community in Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of three residents and disrupted an ongoing WAEC examination.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government said the attackers disguised themselves in military uniforms in an attempt to deceive residents and carry out their operation.
The government extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, the people of Iluke Community, and the entire Bunu District, describing the incident as a painful loss to the state.
Despite the tragedy, the government commended the swift response and bravery of military personnel and local security forces whose intervention foiled what could have been a devastating mass abduction of students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to the statement, the bandits had invaded the examination venue and were already forcing students into the bush when security operatives engaged them in a fierce gun battle.
The government noted that the professionalism, courage, and superior firepower of the security forces led to the successful rescue of all the students, who were returned to safety unharmed.
It further disclosed that one of the attackers was neutralised during the operation, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds. Security agencies, it said, have intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and bring all those connected to the attack to justice.
The state government also praised the military, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security personnel whose commitment and sacrifice prevented further loss of lives and a large-scale abduction.
It assured residents that it is closely monitoring developments in the affected community and working with relevant security agencies to strengthen security presence in the area. Additional measures, the government said, will be announced in due course.
The government urged residents to remain calm and continue to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing operations against criminal elements.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the government declared that Kogi State would not yield to terror and would continue to support coordinated efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
The government once again sympathised with the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with the people of Iluke Community as security agencies work to restore normalcy and ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
