NLC warns nationwide protest over Senate’s uncertainty on Electoral Act

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned that it may summon nationwide protests and possibly boycott future elections over what it described as the Senate’s uncertainty and conflicting position on the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act especially concerning on the issue of electronic transmission of election results.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the uncertainty of the Senate’s position has created a weakening public trust in the electoral process.

Ajaero said, “Nigerians deserve a transparent system where votes are not only counted but seen to be counted.”

Also, the union stated that the Senate recently voted against a provision that would have made real-time electronic transmission of results compulsory, instead they allowed electronic transmission only after results have been counted and announced at polling units.

According to the NLC, the decision could cause doubts about the credibility of elections, particularly after the controversies that followed the 2023 general elections.

The Congress warned that failure to include real-time electronic transmission of results could lead to mass action before, during and after elections, or even lead to a total boycott.

Meanwhile, several civil society organisations and opposition parties also criticized the Senate’s decision, describing it as a setback for democratic development.

However, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, defended the house, insisting that the Senate did not oppose electronic transmission of results and vowed that they will not be intimidated.

The Senate has fixed an emergency plenary session for February 10, 2026, where the rejected amendment will be reviewed following public pressure and the legal actions.
