The Kogi State, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, has commissioned a new Audit House in Lokoja, the state capital, describing it as the first of its kind in Kogi State and Nigeria. The facility was unveiled alongside former Governor of Delta State, Chief James O. Ibori.
Governor Ododo said the commissioning of the Audit House underscores his administration’s commitment to public accountability, openness, transparency, and responsible governance. He noted that the project reflects deliberate efforts to strengthen institutional frameworks that safeguard public resources and promote good governance across the state.
The governor commended his predecessor, former Governor Yahaya Bello, for conceiving the project, and acknowledged the role his administration played in bringing it to fruition. He also expressed appreciation to the Auditor General of the Federation, Shaakaa Kanyior Chira, for attending the ceremony and for providing professional and technical support to Kogi State for four years at no cost.
Governor Ododo further appealed to the Auditor General of the Federation to extend similar capacity building support to the Office of the Auditor General for Local Government in Kogi State. According to him, strengthening both audit institutions concurrently would enhance their competence, effectiveness, and impact on governance at all levels.
Reaffirming his administration’s priorities, the governor said his government remains committed to building systems that protect the public interest, strengthen public institutions, and promote inclusive development.
Speaking at the event, the Auditor General of the Federation, Shaakaa Kanyior Chira, disclosed that his office would continue to provide technical support to sub national audit institutions nationwide without charging professional fees. He explained that this support is part of their national responsibility to strengthen accountability frameworks, while the Kogi State Auditor General’s office would handle the logistical, operational, and administrative aspects required for smooth implementation.
In his remarks, the Auditor General of Kogi State, Alhaji Y. Y. Okala, thanked former Governor Yahaya Bello for initiating the project and commended Governor Ododo for ensuring its completion. He assured the governor that all resources committed to the Audit House would be properly managed and utilized in line with established standards.
Also speaking, the Auditor General for Local Government, Comrade Siyaka Yakubu Adabenege, said the new Audit House would significantly enhance accurate reporting and oversight of local government finances. He noted that the investment would yield lasting dividends in transparency, financial prudence, and improved governance across all local councils, adding that his office would continue to discharge its duties with diligence, patriotism, and integrity.
